Facebook's photo sharing policy doubtful
Monday, December 12, 2011
You love sharing pictures on Facebook with your friends and
relatives, and your settings allow to choose who you would like to share these
pictures or posts, and who you would not. However, a recent loophole in the
privacy settings of Facebook did not let alone even Mr. Mark Zuckerberg, the
founder and CEO of Facebook. This loophole allowed other people access the
private photographs posted by one on his/her wall.
There was a glitch in Facebook, which temporarily allowed the users
of this social networking site to see others private photos and downloading the
same. The CEO”s profile was also ransacked recently, and his photos were posted
on the web.
Randy Abrams, the Independent Security Analyst said
“There are a seemingly infinite number of variables to test for in quality assurance.”
Randy said that access to such information could be very dangerous. A
date on one of your picture could prove that you were at some other location at
that particular time and date, and thus your photo could be misused against
you.
However, Facebook now says it has fixed the problem, and the users can
post their pictures without any fear.
How it
started?
The Facebook’s recent mechanism, which allowed users to report
inappropriate images, gave way to the glitch. If the complainer, clicked on the
‘Report’ tag to complaint against some inappropriate photo, he/she could access
all the other pictures posted in that person’s profile, so that he/she could
check whether these were also inappropriate.
This all was due to some incorrect coding, and Facebook said that it
existed only for a short time. They took this feature offline for some time,
and resolved the problem.
What caused the problem?
According to Abrams
“Fundamentally, the bug was the result of a failure to apply privacy settings to a public search tool.”He also said that posting one’s pictures online is risky. You might keep the privacy setting high, but its just one bug or coding that could change it all.
All
you followers of internet and the devotees of social networking sites out
there; beware of sharing something online.
